Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages down to the depot... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.
British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."
During December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The UN says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
