Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
